I've placed an ASCAP Playback article about Desmond Child inside the Funk Trunk. Very enlightening. I love it when he says,
"A song is an expression of emotion. I liken it to when somebody is telling you about something terrible that happened and then all of a sudden they make it a little more intense, and then all of a sudden they just start boo-hooing (laughs). That’s how it works in pop songwriting. You know, there's the verse that's usually short little phrases, and then comes a little bit more emotional intensity in the transition towards the chorus, and then when the chorus comes in, it’s all hell breaks loose.
